Rip CDs with something that checks its own work

Don't just drag a disc into whatever your OS offers by default. Use a ripper that verifies accuracy against AccurateRip, a database of checksums from other people's rips of the same disc, so you know your copy actually matches the source instead of silently including a read error. Exact Audio Copy on Windows, XLD on macOS, and fre:ac on either are all free and all do this.

MP3 is lossy: it analyzes the audio, decides which parts a human ear is least likely to notice missing, and throws them away to shrink the file. FLAC is lossless: it compresses the file the way a zip archive does, so decoding it gets you back the exact original waveform, bit for bit.
