Trackers and the Demoscene

Tracker music grew out of a need to fit sound into programs that had to load from floppy disks. This page covers the history behind the format and explains why it sounds the way it does.

It started as a cracked commercial product

Karsten Obarski, a German developer working at the game studio EAS, released Ultimate Soundtracker for the Commodore Amiga in December 1987. The program used a grid-based interface where composers entered notes and samples as data rather than performing them live. It also introduced the MOD file format, which combined audio samples and pattern information into one file.

The software failed as a commercial release but proved too valuable to remain proprietary. Demo groups reverse-engineered it in 1988, removing restrictions and creating improved versions like Noisetracker and Protracker. When Obarski released Soundtracker 2 in November of that year, the community had already developed versions that exceeded the official release. The project moved beyond its creator's control quickly, which was typical for demoscene tools.

Why the demoscene needed it

The demoscene centers on demos, which are real-time audiovisual programs created to demonstrate technical skill. Small teams produce these works and present them at demoparties, where they compete in compos competitions.

Trackers worked for the demoscene because of file size constraints rather than artistic preference. The MOD format occupied minimal space, which mattered when demos had to fit within 64 kilobytes or sometimes just 4. A streamed audio track would exceed those limits, but short samples paired with a pattern file of text commands stayed within budget. The tracker format succeeded because it was the only viable option, and its distinctive sound became associated with the scene as a result.

How the format spread

1987

Ultimate Soundtracker launches on the Amiga and introduces the MOD file format.

1993

Future Crew's Second Reality takes first place in the PC competition at Assembly '93 in Finland. The soundtrack, created by Skaven and Purple Motion with Scream Tracker 3, remains one of the most influential demoscene compositions.

1994

Fredrik "Mr. H" Huss and Magnus "Vogue" Högdahl from the demogroup Triton release FastTracker 2. The program introduces the XM format and a mouse-driven interface, becoming the leading PC tracker for the decade. Both developers later founded Starbreeze Studios.

1995

Jeffrey Lim releases Impulse Tracker, an assembly-language program with a keyboard-only interface based on Scream Tracker. The debate between FT2 and IT becomes a long-standing argument in the scene, pitting mouse convenience against keyboard speed.

Each program advanced the format in different ways. Some added more channels, others improved sample quality or interface design. The core concept from 1987 stayed the same throughout: notes and effects entered into a grid, read from top to bottom.

Where chiptune fits in

Chiptune refers to music created using sound chips from older game consoles and computers. It shares some history with tracker culture but remains a separate practice. A chiptune tracker works directly with the limitations of a specific sound chip, typically a small number of square wave and noise channels, similar to how the original Amiga hardware operated. Modern trackers like Traqueur use sampled audio rather than chip synthesis. They still follow the same principle of working within constraints, treating limitations as part of the creative process rather than obstacles to overcome.

Still going

The demoscene continues to operate. Assembly, the Finnish demoparty that featured Second Reality in 1993, held its Summer 2026 edition in Helsinki in August. Revision takes place each Easter in Saarbrücken, Germany, and remains the largest demoscene event. Both events include music competitions. Traqueur follows the same design principles that shaped the original trackers. The program is compact and runs quickly on modest hardware.
