Before Ableton, there was a grid, a floppy disk, and eight channels of chip noise. Here's what a tracker actually is, how it differs from a normal DAW, and why some of us never left.
A tracker, sometimes called music tracker software, lays out a song as a grid instead of a timeline. Rows are steps in time, columns are channels, and each cell holds a note, an instrument number, and up to two effect commands, typed as short hex codes instead of dragged around with a mouse.
The format dates back to 1987, when Karsten Obarski wrote Ultimate Soundtracker on the Commodore Amiga so he could compose music for his own games without hauling a synth into the room. The idea caught on fast: sample a sound once, reuse it everywhere, and write the whole arrangement as text. Within a couple of years the Amiga scene had Noisetracker, Protracker, and a pile of .MOD files trading hands on floppy disks and BBSes.
That grid-and-hex-code approach is still exactly how trackers work today, on Renoise, OpenMPT, Schism, and Traqueur. The interface looks retro because it is retro, on purpose. It's also fast once your hands know it: you're typing music, not clicking it.

Ableton, Logic, FL Studio, and the rest of that crowd are timeline DAWs. You see waveforms and MIDI clips stretched across a horizontal timeline, you draw automation with a mouse, and most instruments come from plugins with their own separate window.
A tracker collapses all of that into one screen. There's no piano roll, no automation lane, no plugin window to alt-tab into. Notes, volume, panning, filter sweeps, retriggers: all of it lives in the same vertical grid, addressed by keyboard shortcuts.

That table is the honest version. DAWs win on mixing large multitrack sessions, working with third-party plugins, and being familiar if you've never touched a tracker in your life. Trackers win on speed once you're fluent, on resource use, and on giving you full control without ever leaving the keyboard.
None of this is nostalgia. People still write trackers, and other people still buy and use them, for reasons that have nothing to do with retro cred.

Technically yes, DAW just means digital audio workstation, and a tracker qualifies. In practice people use "DAW" to mean the timeline style (Ableton, Logic) and "tracker" for the grid style, so the two words usually describe different workflows even though one is a subset of the other.
